Root Chakra 

location: perineum/base of the spine (pelvis and legs included)

fragrances: sandalwood, musk cedarwood, white fir
endocrine gland: adrenals (fight or flight)

In balance: relaxed, trusting, patience, grounded, secure, vital/strong/healthy, energized, flexible, clear, generous, motivated

Out-of-balanced: fearful, unfocused, inability to commit, unstable, un-energized, inflexible, confused, doubtful, uncomfortable in body, disconnected from emotions, selfish, unmotivated, unable to complete goals, disorganized, manipulative, organ/system dysfunction: large intestine, muscular, skeletal

Essence: we can not grow and evolve until we feel safe, secure and nourished.  when our foundation (roots) are strong, grounded and nourished, we can then grow into the divine love and light we came here to be.

self-care techniques

movement: walking on dirt paths out in nature, dancing (i.e. ecstatic and shamanic drumming), stomping your feet, gardening, yoga; really connect all corners of your feet to your mat and visualize rooting down into the earth – specific poses: mountain pose (tadasana), tree pose (vrksasana), child’s pose (balasana) and corpse pose (savasana)

sitting/visualization: sit out in nature on logs, rocks, grass and breath up earth energy into your feet, legs and pelvis (running earth energy exercise)

diet: eat plenty of root vegetables (beets; bonus for being red, carrots, radishes, parsnips, etc), ground yourself with protein (quality meat, beans, nuts and greens)

affirmations: “my life has purpose and I have the right to be here”, “all my needs are met and will be met”, “I am capable and willing to meet life’s challenges”, “here and now, I stand in MY truth”, etc.

stones: of the stones listed above, you can carry smaller ones in your pants pockets, place over your pubic area and relax for 10-20 minutes, place them around your house, sleep when them by or under your bed, etc.

essential oils: of the oils listed above, put a few drops on the bottom of your feet and a few drops in your hands and rub them together and inhale a few times then run your scented hands up the insides of your legs and down the backsides of your legs and end placing your hands over your low pelvis and saying your favorite affirmation to “lock in” the healing intention.

color therapy: wear clothes (especially pants/skirts/shorts because of their location on the body) and shoes that are red.

 

Sacral Chakra 

location: below the naval (genitals and womb)
color: orange
element: water
obstacle: guilt
sense: taste
stones: amber, moonstone, orange calcite, citrine, topaz, copper, carnelian
basic right: to want/to feel
development: 6 months to 2 years
psychological function: desire and sexuality
fragrances: orange, ylang ylang, jasmine, gardenia, patchouli
endocrine gland: ovaries/testes (procreation)

In balance: ability to experience pleasure, balanced and stable emotions, present and centered, fluid, productive, creative, intimate, living in a state of harmony and abundance, expressive

Out-of-balanced: emotionally unstable (depression/rage), repression of feelings, inability to let go, rigid/inflexible (in actions and body), blocks to intimacy/sexuality/creativity, low back pain, pelvic pain, bitterness, infertility, disconnected to others, lack of purpose, organ dysfunctions: bladder, kidneys, reproductive

Essence: this water element chakra desires to be flowing with the currents of life; to be bending, moving and shifting, discovering the fluid beauty on the banks of life.  this chakra wants to show the world what beautiful creations lie within; to bring forth human life and artistic outbursts.  the sacral chakra wants to connect to the sacredness of it’s sexuality; to be guilt-free to receive pleasure and intimacy from breath, sustenance and human relationships.  this chakra is the emotional intelligence center and wants to feel supported and safe to express inner desires and ongoing emotions in a balanced nature.

balancing self-care techniques

movement: swimming, dance (free-form, belly dance), hula hooping, sex/intimacy, hiking near water (i.e. Eagle Creek), yoga; connect into your low abdomen – specific poses: locust (salabahasana), bow pose (dhanaurasana), cobra (bhujangasana), pigeon (eka pada rajakapotasana) *look up on the web demonstrations of these poses.  artistic expression: painting, collaging, writing/journaling, etc.

sitting/visualization: relax/float in water (bath, river, lake or a float tank) and allow yourself to be fully supported by the water visualizing water flowing through your body, cleansing and removing any impurities and blockages.

diet: drink plenty of pure water (general rule of thumb is half your body weight in ounces per day), allow yourself to take pleasure in the foods you consume (too ridged of a diet will deplete the sacral chakra – overindulgence will too, so aim to allow yourself to respectfully indulge in those pleasure foods.)

affirmations: “my sexuality is sacred and I allow myself to receive pleasure”,  I am a sexual, sensual and intimate human being”, “I am creative and my creations are worthwhile”, “I feel pleasure and abundance with every breath I take”, “my movements, thoughts and actions are fluid and harmonious”, “I want to take care of myself so I can continue to do the things that I love”, “I thrive on spontaneity and exploring new horizons.” etc.

stones: of the stones listed above, you can wear or carry smaller ones in your pants pockets, place below your navel and relax for 10-20 minutes, place them around your house, sleep with them by or under your bed, etc.

essential oils: of the oils listed above, put a few drops in your hands and rub them together and inhale a few times then lightly massage your low abdomen (right to left circles) and end by placing your hands just below your navel and saying your favorite affirmation to “lock in” the healing intention.

color therapy: wear clothes (especially pants/skirts/shorts because of their location on the body) and belts that are orange.

Solar Plexus

location: abdomen (below sternum and above belly button)
color: yellow
element: fire
obstacle: insecurity and arrogance
sense: sight
stones: yellow citrine, tigers eye, amber sunstone, topaz, yellow jasper
basic right: to act
development: 1.5 to 3.5 years
psychological function: will
fragrances: ylang, ylang, ginger, lemon, wild orange, peppermint
endocrine gland: pancreas (produces insulin, which is the energy/fuel for the body)

In balance: aligned with highest purpose/soul’s path, radiates self-worth, confident, outgoing, noble, assertive, healthy boundaries, full of life, warm personality, supportive, considerate, intentional, conscious, charismatic

Out-of-balanced: dysfunctional organs/systems: liver, pancreas (diabetes), gallbladder, spleen, respiratory, digestive (IBS, crohn’s) excess: manipulative, arrogant, believing you are better than others, single-minded vs. community minded deficient: shy, shameful, passive aggressive, poor boundaries, learning disabilities, fatigue (lack of energy), lack of courage/confidence, disempowered, victim mentality

Essence: this fire element chakra wants us to radiate our self-worth and to be unapologetic for who we (truly) are.  this willfull chakra wants us to take action on our convictions and  to stand up the rights of ourselves and others.  this truth chakra encourages us to listen to our “gut feeling” and to validate our intuition.  this power chakra urges us to be confident, to take up space and to chase our dreams.  this sunny chakra helps us transform our fears and doubts into energy and power.

balancing self-care techniques

movement: martial arts (emphasis on personal strength and honor), yoga – vinyasa, birkrum/hot yoga and kundalini are excellent practices to strengthen this chakra, expressive dance (proud chest and puff out your “feathers”, gather inspiration from watching a bird of paradise in a courtship dance  …the idea is to have some fun ?

sitting/visualization: meditate/bathe surrounded by candles light, gaze at the flame of a candle and let it fill your being with warm radiant light, imagine the warm sun radiating in your solar plexus and allow this internal sun to nourish your entire body: bathing your digestive organs with healing light, detoxing your liver, gall bladder, pancreas and spleen and warming your lungs, etc.  visualize yourself standing up for yourself and saying “no, that won’t work for me” to those you have a hard time saying “no” to.  practice trusting your intuition.  when faced with a decision, ask yourself “will this leave me feeling empowered?”, and act accordingly.  build a fire (inside or out) and contemplate your soul’s path, how you are aligned with your highest self and allow spirit to impress upon your heart what is needed from you at the current moment, for your spiritual evolution.

diet: be mindful that what and how (slow and mindful) you eat becomes your energy, vitality and how you feel. eat and drink warming spices, foods and drinks: ginger, cinnamon, mints, teas, soups, kitchari (Ayurvedic healing porridge) and consider an anti-inflammatory diet

affirmations: “I am confident and courageous”, I radiate the energy and warmth of the sun”, “I acknowledge my divine creative power and the divine creative power in others”, “I am willing to take action towards making my dreams a reality”, “I am highly intuitive and I listen to the small, still voice within me”, “I choose to release limiting messages/beliefs from my childhood…I am _____ (opposite of limiting belief)”, etc.

In balance: loving, nurturing, compassionate, kind, peaceful, joyful, expressive, warm, personable, calm, honest, generous, expansive

Out-of-balanced: dysfunctional organs/systems: respiratory (i.e. asthma), circulatory (i.e. poor circulation, blood pressure, heart attacks), disconnected from emotions, lacking compassion, unable to share feelings, destructive behaviors, unable to forgive, un-trusting of the generosity of the world, pessimistic, inability to bond, easy to upset, depression, stuck in grief

Essence: this air element reminds us to be our highest selves and that we are of the same patchwork of Source (God) Energy.  the expansive heart chakra wants to love and be loved and show compassion for self and others.

balancing self-care techniques

movement: yoga in general; specific poses: fish pose (matsyasana) and camel pose (ushtrasana), tai chi/qi gong, dance in general (especially dance that makes you feel expansive and full of love – using scarves allows in a feminine quality and is an expressive art-form, open you arms and allow your heart to receive the abundance of love), walking in the woods (green is heart energy); we are lucky to live in the lush pacific northwest.  hugs!  get out there and hug people like you mean it.  let your heart and body completely connect with the recipient and allow enough time to inhale and exhale.

sitting/visualization: visualize divine love and light filling up your chest and expanding beyond your body; you can place your hands on your heart and/or see green of light pink healing energy.  lie down and place your hands over your heart and ask what is needed to release any blockages held here; allow yourself enough time to hear your inner voice and trust what you receive.

diet: be mindful that what and how (slow and mindful) you eat becomes your energy, vitality and how you feel.  eat your greens!  lightly steamed kale, collards, spinach, etc.

affirmations: “love is the answer to everything and is all around me”, “I am an infinite being full of Divine love and light”, “unconditional love flows through me”, “I am love”, “I freely give love and receive love”, “I have an infinite supply of love”, “I am grateful for challenges that help me transform and open up to an even greater capacity of love”,

Out-of-balanced: inability to express or speak up for oneself, talking too much/unable to speak, dishonest/lying, inability to be creative, gossiping, fear of public speaking/shy, feeling misunderstood or not being heard, when frustration leads to shouting or with-drawl from communication, unable to express self creatively. Physical Symptoms: TMJ/teeth grinding, reocuring sore throats, stiff neck, neck fusions, headaches, dental issues, oral fixations (eating, smoking, drinking), loss of voice, stuttering, easily offended/taking things too seriously, nervous laughter, loud/boisterous

Essence: this ether element calls upon our Highest Selves to lovingly and effectively communicate/express our inner truth and feelings, all while able to hold space for others to speak their truth.

movement: yoga in general! my favorite throat openers: bridge pose, camel pose and fish pose.  In all poses, visualize sky blue light radiating from your throat chakra.  tai chi/qi gong.  Singing/chanting/kirtan.

sitting/visualization:  lie down and visualize a clear, blue sky filling up your throat, expanding beyond your body.  after a few minutes, once the “clouds” have cleared, ask what is needed to release any blockages held here.  trust what you receive and be patient with your request.  express gratitude when done.

diet: mindfully chew your food.  eat in silence.  drink lots of water, though separate from your meals; general rule is half your body weight in ounces, i.e. if you weigh 120 pounds that 60 ounces.  citrus helps to break up mucus in the throat, so adding lemon and limes to your water.

affirmations: “I am able to communicate myself lovingly and authentically”, I am open, clear and honest with my communication”, “I have the right to speak my truth”, “I express my self creatively through language, writing and/or art”, “I am committed to speak with integrity and truth”, “I hold space for others to share their feelings and inner truth”, “My intent is to communicate for the greater good of humanity”
